As a brand in an industry where your customers have raised sustainability to the top of their list of demands, you are probably already committed to sustainable sourcing for your products. But what about the companies building and outfitting your fitness or wellness facility?

Many lighting manufacturers are now being assessed by third party sustainability assessment organizations and so an easy check is simply to ask if your lighting supplier has a rating and what their score is.

If they don’t have a rating or don’t want to tell you what is then…(???)

Sustainability Starts with Lowering Energy Consumption

Lighting is a significant contributor to energy consumption in gyms. However, there are several effective strategies you can implement to reduce your energy usage without compromising on illumination quality.

For new facilities, energy codes, where they have been updated, will be your best guide, but as a simple rule make sure you are using LED-based lighting. LED lights are highly energy-efficient, have a longer lifespan, and produce less heat. This not only reduces your energy consumption but also lowers your cooling costs as your HVAC system will have less heat to dissipate.

Installing occupancy sensors and timers will also help to ensure that the lights are only operating when they are needed.

What's Important For You To Know

Ensure you are using energy efficient LED lighting and check the sustainability credentials of your lighting supplier by asking about their score as determined by a 3rd party assessment service.
